At what age does a child grow a filter in their ears that specifically tunes out the voices of your mother and father? Was it two? Or two and a half? I know it started before he turned three. Maybe he's just gifted? Whatever the reason is and when ever it actually happened is irrelevant. It's there now and I want it removed. It takes a good three times, at least, before the armadillo actually realizes that we are calling his name. It's so highly frustrating that this selective hearing has invaded my armadillo's little body. I swear that I will lose my voice before he turns four due to all of the yelling and screaming ... "Armadillo ... armadillo ... armadillo ... ARMADILLO! ... ARMADILLO! ARMADILLO!" ... All day long. It doesn't seem I'm physically tired anymore, it's mental. Mental. Mentally exhausting saying the same things over and over and over again. You know the saying, "in one ear and out the other". We don't even get that far. I'm lucky if out of 10 times of saying the same thing, it actually makes it in the ear once and processed for action.
If I had a penny for every time I called the armadillo's name and got no response I could buy a bullhorn to communicate with my son ... and one for every parent that shares my misery.
